Ladislao;
I never did know who Stanley was.
I presume he was one of the senior boys.
As the older boys in the den left, younger boys became involved
in the den.
I was in several dens.
The first one we built was close to the ravine on the lower road
to the reservoir.
We cleared the land and built a small den with the trees in the
forest.
It was a poor site as boys stoned us and sent boulders rolling
down the hill.
The next den we had was at a higher in elevation up the hill from
the swimming pool (not built at that time, only a large excavation.)
At that den I can remember raising homing pigeons.
Stanley’s den was the best den.
They had acquired the most construction materials from various
construction projects at the Mount.
Lumber, galvanized roofing and siding. The land was level.
Here one of the things we did was to buy chickens from Br. Bruno
at the poultry.
We sometimes bought chicks and raised them ourselves.
All chickens were curried in a kerosene tin.
Rice, probably cooked in a liberated scout pot.
The food was very bad at the Mount so we raided avocados,
mangoes, grapefruit, tomatoes, and liberated bread from the bakery of Br Soir,
a large black Monk.
We brewed coffee and smoked cigarettes.
Another person I remember was Mr Peters, the plumber.
He had a very low station in life at the Mount as the British
would say.
When the food at dinner was especially bad we would in the night,
on our walk up the lower road from the refectory to the school, decide that Mr
Peter should pay.
We would stone his tin house with everything from stones to some
rather large boulders.
We revelled in the sound of the rocks hitting the galvanized
sheets in the quiet tropical nights as we enjoyed smoking our Anchor
cigerettes.
The next day the usual warning came from the headmaster’s office,
“Please do not stone Mr Peter’s house."
Another incident I remember at the Apiery was when Delima bet he
could sit in the pipe rails next to the bee hives and have a bee walk on his
nose.
We bet him a shilling he could not do it.
A large crowd of boys gathered around and Delima proceeded to
slowly sit on the pipe rails. his movement were slow and the bees were nor
being agitated.
He slowly put his hand out and some bees began to climb on up his
arm. One of the boys who made the bet , fearing he was about to lose his bet ,
picked up a rock and hit the bee hive.
All hell broke loose, and Delima was seen running through the
wood in hot pursuit by a large swarm of bees.
I will send you a few more photos of the Mount in 1954.
Best regards. Keep up the good work you are doing heeping us in
touch with the past.
Bruce

Dear Bruce,
Thank you for the photo, these old gems are well appreciated.
If you have other ones please send as the Circular needs them to
keep alive.
Can you write about Stanley´s Den, who was Stanley, a settler,
part of the community, or teacher??
What was the use of the Den??
God Bless
Ladislao

This photo was taken about 1954 at Stanley’s Den up the hill from
the school.
The chickens were bought from Br. Bruno at the poultry farm.
Sometimes they were bought as chicks at the start of term, raised,
then we would have a party and curry them.
It sure beat the food at the Mount. The best curry cook was Lee
Kit.
He had great knowledge about keeping and catching song birds, raising
and training homing pigeons, cooking curries, which curry powder to buy (Turban
Brand ).
In the photo are Jean Claude Pecquet, Alain Deveaux and Bruce
Peter.

Caraballeda, Venezuela—
At 10:28 a.m. La Guaira time on day three of the La Guaira
Billfish Shootout, the all-time tournament record for blue marlin was broken
and a place in history for the 40 boats and 118 anglers was secured.
Angler Rolph Hive of Trinidad, fishing aboard the Freedom,
released the 191st blue marlin of the tournament, breaking the previous record
of 190 blue marlin caught during the 1988 Club Nautico de San Juan in Puerto
Rico.
Captain of team On ‘D Job, David Duncan, along with his teammates
Adam Hive, Rolph Hive and Nigel Garcia emerged in the number one spot after
they accumulated 256.6 points.
They caught three wahoo on the first day and two on the second.
In January 1993 Rolf Hive became president of the organisation
that now had total responsibility for all power boat racing in Trinidad and
Tobago
